Letter to my graduate daughter with credit to and quotes from :
Oh the Places You will Go! by Dr Seuss .
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!
You are young, beautiful, full of life and dreams of the places you will go, the things you will accomplish and the adventures you will experience.
You are a graduate of 2012, starting life as a young professional.
After many years of study, living now becomes a serious business. You have to pay your own rent, medical and car insurance, buy your own food, do the washing and cleaning and keep up the pace at a job.
Yes , but as I heard you say: ” Maybe being grown up is not so much fun after all”
For you might or rather:
You will come to a place where the streets are not marked.
Some windows are lighted. But mostly they’re darked.
A place you could sprain both your elbow and chin!
Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in?
How much can you lose? How much can you win?
That will be the time when you need to become a ” mind-maker-upper “ or find yourself in a place of waiting which can be a quite useless and time wasting place.
But don’t be afraid for :
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you’re too smart to go down any not-so-good street.
You will make mistakes, fall into a slump, meet things that scare you and give you a bump,
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life’s
a Great Balancing Act.
I’m afraid that some times
you’ll play lonely games too.
Games you can’t win
’cause you’ll play against you.
But I know:
On and on you will hike
and I know you’ll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are.
I have faith in you that you will find the bright places and move mountains. You will keep on hiking and I will be watching to see where you are going and what you will become.
I say to you again:
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!
Remember I will always love you and pray for you.
Your loving Mom
